A beautiful, sunny autumn afternoon may seem the perfect time to get out your camera to capture those amazing fall colors. Unfortunately, bright sunlight can make photographing rich fall colors difficult because that bright light can tend to make those colors look washed out in in your images.
In the video below, RC Concepcion of KelbyOne talks about using a diffuser when shooting fall colors in open sunlight. The diffuser softens the light and lets you capture the colors so that they look rich and lush in your images.
The video shows the difference that the soft light of a diffuser can make as RC photographs his daughter in a pumpkin field. But a diffuser can be useful in lots of other situations when shooting fall colors. I like to use one when photographing leaves and other small details up close because it gives me the soft, diffuse light that lets me capture those wonderful colors in all their saturated glory.
That’s why a diffuser is one of my most important accessories when photographing fall colors.
